KEY TASKS THIS MONTH

  • Make sure to prune any fruit trees that need it!
  • Keep ponds and water features topped up
  • Used your stored water from water butts to water containers and newer plants
  • Begin to divide summer flowering perennials as they produce their last flowers 
  • Feed your soil with the appropriate manures, e.g. green manure! 
  • Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Pieris, and Camellias  need to be fed with a suitable granular fertilizer
  • Continue to collect your seeds from the garden this month

PREP

It's also important to prepare your garden for the month ahead, here are some key tasks to get you started!

  • Ideal to check what went well this year and what could be improved next year 
  • If you are finding any gaps in your garden, why not plant spring-flowering bulbs?
  • Start planning for autumn, always better to be prepared
  • Make sure to stay on top of weed-killing too! With the right products

WHAT TO PLANT THIS MONTH

  • You can plant autumn flowering Cyclamen,  this is ideal to replace now dying bedding! 
  • If you have planted leeks, you can now transplant them to their ending position do this once the thickness looks just right
  • Why not take cuttings of your herbs so you can replace older plants next spring? Try it with Rosemary and Sage!
  • You can start sowing spinach and lettuce now

PRUNING

Pruning and training your plants is a vital step towards achieving a beautiful garden! Over the winter months your plants have definitely overgrown or got damaged, so for healthy future growth it's important to prune!

  • Continue to cut down stems on perennials, why not add these to your compost heap?
  • Hedges may be becoming untidy. Make sure you trim these to keep them looking great!
  • Prune early flowering shrubs, this will encourage more growth and blooms next year

GARDEN  MAINTENANCE

Maintenance is vital for your garden. It's important to keep on top of jobs and keep your garden looking to the best of its ability!

  • Once your water butts are empty its time to clean them and remove any algae that may be inside
  • Make sure to sweep your patio and keep up with weeding
  • Use compost as a mulch!

WILDLIFE

It’s a great time to encourage wildlife into your garden using some tempting treats, but also it’s important to watch out for them eating your crops or damaging the health of your plants and flowers!

  • If you have fruit trees in your garden and they start to drop, leave some of the dropped fruit for a treat to wildlife
  • Make sure to keep birdbaths and feeders topped up 
  • Try using home DIY’s  to attract bumblebees

PEST CONTROL

  • Make sure rubbish bins are sealed
  • Look out for these this month! - powdery mildew, vine weevils and lily beetles
  • In July your broad beans could be affected by blackfly so make sure you pinch off the tips where they're being damaged! 
  • Make sure to control slugs/ snails, as they will only eat your crops but also damage them!
