Camellia

Often lauded as the ‘roses of Spring’, Camellias are amongst the first shrubs to flower in your garden in late Winter. These gorgeous, evergreens originate from south east Asia from the Himalayas down to Japan and Indonesia and are ideal for any size garden. In a larger garden they will grow into a large plant up to 5m tall. If your space is restricted, grow them in a large pot using ericaceous compost (soil for acid loving plants- ask us - we can point you in the right direction!) Camellias flower from late January until April and are available in colours from the purest white through shades of pink on to dark reds. Because they are evergreen they never leave a hole in your garden. Feed with an ericaceous feed (that word again - acid loving !) and they will give you years of pleasure.

Flowering Cherry

Hanami is the Japanese word meaning ‘flower viewing’ and is used to describe the simple pleasure of enjoying the beauty of transient flowers, particularly flowering cherries in Spring time. There are many types of flowering cherry suitable for any garden size. If you have a larger garden, try Prunus ‘Hokusai’, a vigorous spreading tree with double pink flowers. If your plot is smaller, go for a weeping variety like Prunus Kiku shidare Zakura, again with double pink flowers. A great variety for a pot would be Prunus kojo-no-mai. This dwarf cherry grows into a large shrub in time and is covered with pale pink flowers from late March to April. They aren't fussy about which type of soil they grow in or whether they are in sun or shade, but  I think they look best with the sun behind them. lighting up the early spring leaves and blooms. The smaller varieties of Cherry are also suitable for growing in containers; use a half oak barrel and plant in John Innes #3 compost for years of enjoyment. As an added bonus many have superb Autumn leaf colour too. They don't need pruning - just feed with fish blood and bone 3 times a year and they will reward you with years of colour.

We have many varieties of flowering cherry in stock ready to plant in your garden now.
